Wockhardt has expanded its marketing access for Miqnaf in India following the removal of a supply condition. The company's biotechnology sector recorded significant revenue growth, indicating strong demand for its products. Zaynich received US FDA approval for complicated urinary tract infections, serving as a milestone for Indian pharmaceuticals.

Wockhardt has expanded marketing access to its novel antibiotic Miqnaf (nafithromycin) in India after the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) removed a supply condition, the company said in its second-quarter earnings announcement.

The removal of the condition will facilitate access to the drug for a wider patient population, Wockhardt said. The company has deployed a field force for Miqnaf and reported increasing clinical acceptance, citing its pathogen coverage and shorter therapy.

Wockhardt plans to file for an additional indication for Miqnaf for upper respiratory tract infections in the third or fourth quarter of FY27.

The announcement comes as the pharmaceutical company reported a 24% year-on-year increase in consolidated revenue to Rs 969 crore in the second quarter of FY27, compared with Rs 782 crore in the year-ago quarter.

Consolidated profit after tax (PAT), however, declined to Rs 73 crore from Rs 82 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) stood at Rs 165 crore, compared with Rs 160 crore a year ago. EBITDA, excluding pre-launch expenses for Zaynich, was Rs 201 crore.

Wockhardt also highlighted the US Food and Drug Administration's approval of its novel antibiotic Zaynich on May 29 for complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI), including pyelonephritis.

The company said Zaynich is the first drug discovered and developed in India to receive US FDA approval.

The European Medicines Agency is reviewing the drug's dossier for proposed indications including cUTI, complicated intra-abdominal infections, hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated pneumonia, and bloodstream infections.

In India, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation granted manufacturing and marketing approval for Zaynich on August 25, 2026.

Wockhardt said five of its novel antibiotics, Emrok, Emrok O, Miqnaf, Zaynich and Foviscu, have completed Phase 3 trials.

        Biotech business records growth

Wockhardt's biotechnology operations reported revenue of Rs 252 crore in the second quarter, up 68% year-on-year. Revenue for the first half of FY27 rose 87% to Rs 487 crore.

The company said its emerging-market biotechnology business recorded around 110% growth in the first half, with opportunities and partnerships across Brazil, Thailand, Egypt, Algeria and Latin America. Its India biotechnology business recorded double-digit growth.

The India branded business reported second-quarter revenue of Rs 146 crore, up 8%, while first-half revenue rose 14% to Rs 303 crore.

Revenue from emerging markets increased 52% to Rs 310 crore in the second quarter and 54% to Rs 574 crore in the first half.

During the quarter, Wockhardt reported 24 filings, 18 approvals and 11 launches in its international business. Its biosimilar business recorded two filings and four approvals, while its new chemical entity (NCE) business reported one filing and two approvals.

The company also said it filed seven patents and received six patent grants during the quarter. Its cumulative patent filings stood at 3,298, with 865 patents granted.
